Karin Wiertz trained as a textile designer. After completing her studies, she, along with Jacques Verbeek, created many experimental animated films for many years. Their film works are now managed by the Dutch Film Museum “Eye".
However, she always continued working with textiles and both influences are still visible in her visual art. As her textile work required larger formats over time, and the execution of her ideas in textiles would take a considerable amount of time, she switched to a different medium and begane executing her designs as paintings.
The size of all her canvases is 120 x 80 cm or 80 x 80 cm. In addition to using acrylic paint on canvas, she sometimes incorporates textile materials such as ribbons and felt. She creates an exact design for the composition beforehand, the color is chosen during the execution on canvas.
Each of her series focuses on a limited number of themes. She is often inspired by weaving and braiding, children’s puzzels and modular designs. She works with horizontal and vertical lines as a base or utilizes isometric triangels. Each canvas is a continuation of the previous one, making her work suitable for series. Her paintings are termed: ” geometric abstract “ .
In addition to her own visual art, Karin taught color theory and pattern design for 30 years at the Academy of Fine Arts in Maastricht.
